The hilltop village of Roussillon
7 km from our hotel in Gordes, Roussillon is one of the most beautiful villages in France. Located in the Vaucluse in the heart of the largest deposits of ochre in the world, it offers a festival of colours and light in the green of the countryside between Ventoux and Luberon.
This magical site is a picturesque maze of coloured alleyways and tiny squares where it is nice to take a breather before going on to the Castrum, the highest point of the village, where you might linger (viewpoint indicator) to enjoy the extraordinary view over the valley and Mont Ventoux.
All year round, except in January, enjoy the fine walk along the Sentier des Ocres with the option of a short walk of half an hour or a longer one of an hour. Along your way, you will find small panels that provide explanations about the geology, the flora, the history, the ochre quarries of Luberon… For those who do not wish to walk, visit the ochres and colour conservatoire near the village of Roussillon, to discover the history of ochre, its uses and the different steps involved in processing the ore, from mining to firing, as well as exhibitions on the theme of colour.
After a busy day in the Vaucluse, the hotel swimming pool awaits you for a well-deserved rest.
