Fontaine de Vaucluse
Located in the heart of the Monts de Vaucluse and the region of Sorgues, the most beautiful river in the Department, La Sorgue, rises here at Fontaine de Vaucluse. 25 minutes from the hotel, discover the village which gave its name to the Vaucluse ("Vallis Clausa") and the exceptional natural site it occupies. You will be able to admire the unusual source of the river that springs from the foot of a 230-m-high cliff. The source, known as a "fountain", is the most powerful in France and the fifth most powerful in the world. It changes considerably from one season to the next. Calm and peaceful in summer, as if sleeping at the bottom of the chasm, in the spring it falls in boiling cascades with the snowmelt. In autumn, when it rains heavily, the water level gradually rises until it flows and falls over the rocks. This impressive sight of power and beauty attracts visitors from all over the world.
In the village itself, which is a pleasure to visit in the freshness produced by the source, you can discover the remains of the chateau of the Bishops of Cavaillon that date from the XIV century, the church of Notre Dame and Saint Véran, which is a listed historical monument housing in its crypt the tomb of Saint Véran, the column erected in 1804 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Petrarch, the ruins of a Roman canal built along the left bank of the River Sorgue, the numerous artisans and artists' workshops, and the museum of Santons (terracotta figurines) and the Traditions of Provence with over 2,000 santons of all sizes.
